Interfaith Bridging – PICS is currently working on an interfaith dialogue project called ACED, “ Accepting Cultures and Embracing Diversities” funded by EmbraceBC. The aim of this project is to create awareness about the diverse populations of British Columbia and dispel myths about one’s religion and culture. The aim is to create an environment where stereotyping is minimized and an inclusive community is created.


Past workshops

We had two workshops under this project. The first workshop, “ Journey Into Hinduism” was at the Surrey Vedic Hindu Temple. It was attended by people of different faith groups in BC. Hindu scholar, Dr. Swami Satyaprakash Ji.

The event was attended by people from Hindu, Sikh, Muslim and Christian faiths. The attendees included the BC Muslim Association, Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association, Vedic Hindu Society, Vishva Hindu Parishad, Sahaja Yoga Group and representatives from various churches in the area. PICS C.E.O., Mr. Charan Gill introduced the speaker Dr. Swami Satyaprakash Ji who gave information about History and Principles of Hinduism. He emphasized on the fact that all religions preach forgiveness, love and peace and the difference is merely in the path. The talk was followed by a Question and Answer Session and Lunch at the Temple Dining Hall which was thoroughly enjoyed by the participants

The second workshop was held at the Whalley Library and was attended by people from Hindu, Sikh, Muslim and Christian faiths. The attendees included the BC Muslim Association, Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association, Vedic Hindu Society, Vishva Hindu Parishad, Sahaja Yoga Group and representatives from various churches in the area. It was also attended by other interfaith groups like Surrey Neighbouring faith group. The funding agency EmbraceBC was also present.

The event was opened by Charan Gill, PICS CEO and Devinder Chattha, Director, language and Settlement Services. The first speaker, Dr. Krishan Bector spoke on many Hindu Symbols like the Bindi. Swastika, Tilak etc and explained the significance of these symbols in Hinduism. Dr. Bector also stressed on the importance of Interfaith Dialogue in the Lower Mainland. The talk was followed by Christian speaker Peter Nikkel who explained the significance of Christian symbols to the gathering. Multifaith Group Sahaja Yoga explained the various chakras in Human Body and how meditation can lead us to a balanced life.

The next speaker Mr. Sukhdaev Singh gave us an insight into Sikhism, the different symbols that represent the Sikh Faith and the articles of faith in Sikhism. Mufti Aasim A Rashid shed light on the various aspects of Islam. He also shed light on the pilgrimage to Mecca. The talk was followed by a brief question answer session. The closing was done by Charan Gill, PICS CEO who stressed on the importance of such projects and how we can ensure more understanding through them.
