Delta Welcoming and Inclusive Communities

WICWP is a three-year initiative supported with funding from Citizenship and Immigration Canada through the Agreement for Canada-BC Cooperation on Immigration.

The Knowledge Development and Exchange Project is handled by PICS in collaboration with community partners in Delta.

The Welcoming and Inclusive Communities and Workplaces Project (WICWP) is to support inclusive, welcoming and vibrant communities in B.C. where immigrants can realize their full potential, racism is eliminated, and cultural diversity is valued and celebrated. WICWP is innovative in that it serves as a bridge between diverse sectors and provides an opportunity for collaboration and broader sector engagement in fostering welcoming and inclusive communities. As such, this program is about capacity building at the community, provincial and regional levels, developing broad, long-term partnerships across sectors and stakeholder groups, and serving as a catalyst for systemic change.

PICS is handling the project in Delta. This project will provide information about Delta Stats and Trends and issues of immigration. It involves needs assessment, creation of Directory of Community Resources for the youth, and Surveys and Focus Groups. This Project will give a better understanding of Delta as a community and will assist in the establishment of the community goals and priorities, and mobilize action where needed.

The stats and trends seek to develop a theoretical framework of youth empowerment in the context of health promotion and intervention in the community. We interviewed some employers that attended our Mega Job Fair to understand the employer perspective on hiring youth. We asked various types of employers ranging from those who work for the government to those in private sector and came up with results of what they are looking for when hiring a youth. Our PICS team also made a directory for the youth, which is a helpful reference book containing resources and information relevant to the day-to-day lives of the youth. There are many more supportive resources contained in this project to help the youth in Delta and Delta as a community.

Purpose of study:

  • Understand the current situation.
  • See -ahead and project what the future will be like.
  • Understand trends and develop awareness of the needs of the immigrants.
  • Identify areas for future studies.

Community Partners in Delta

We thank our community partners for helping us in this project:

PCRS Immigrant Youth Outreach Program - The goal of the Immigrant Youth Outreach Program (IYOP) is to empower and assist immigrant youth to overcome the challenges created by cultural and background differences, leading to a full and integrated life in their newly adopted country. Outreach Counsellors guide youths on how to achieve their Educational, Employment, Training, Volunteer and ESL goals.

The program, in partnership with Douglas College, works exclusively with immigrants aged 15-25 years old who also meet the following criteria: new to Canada (5 years or less); permanent resident or refugee; residing in Surrey, Delta and Langley; not attending mainstream high school; unemployed or under-employed (20 hours or less). IYOP works to develop the essential skills and knowledge required to meet their personal training, education or employment goals. The 12-week program offers participants a choice between a 4-week intensive training program which includes job search, career planning and skills assessment training, or one-to-one individual workshops relevant to their personal needs. Throughout the week1-1 ESL classes are provided in literacy, written, grammar, comprehension, conversational and accent reduction. Employment training certificates are available and may include Food Safe, Cashier & Customer Service, Serving It Right, First Aid, World-host and WHIMIS.

The program services are provided in multiple languages. The program Counselor will develop individualized service plans relevant to participant needs and long-term goals.
