Women's Housing

The South Asian population is the fastest growing population in Surrey and North Delta. The population in Surrey increased from 50,000 in 1996 to 108,000 in 2006 and in North Delta from 8,000 to over 14,000. Most of these are new immigrants who are subject to the strains of integrating into B.C. society including: finding employment, learning a new language, securing housing and adjusting to a new culture. There are many strains on families that result in abuse and deprivation of women within the family. This, of course, has a negative and lasting impact on children. According to the Surrey RCMP, in the last year there have been 155 reported cases of assault of South Asian female, with at least three cases resulting in death. Many more cases go unreported. Most women in abusive relationships cannot leave due to a lack of income, an unavailability of affordable housing, and insufficient social support and knowledge of how to access services.
