EMPLOYment assistance services - Vancouver

Our Vancouver office offers various employment assistance programs and services for clients. We provide Case Management/Employment Counseling for all immigrants; this program helps clients identify and accomplish their career goals. Our core employment programs are a Group Job Search Program and Individual Job Search Program and Job Development. Through these programs, participants are given two very different ways to approach their job search. Once registered with a Employment Assistance Services, clients can access our Career Centre for access to computers and other job search resources.

Case Management/Employment Counseling

Our experienced Case Managers are here to help clients identify and accomplish career goals. PICS Case Managers assist unemployed newcomers and those that have previously immigrated to Canada overcome their employment barriers and find meaningful work.

Our practitioners will assess a client’s career needs and help formulate a customized Return-to-Work Action Plan, laying out the detailed steps needed to find work. The Case Manager will suggest the appropriate programs and services for the client’s situation. Then the client may need to do some research to determine the most suitable of the programs identified, and obtain a referral from the Case Manager. Some clients only register for one program (e.g. Job Finding Club) and are successful in becoming employed. Others may need to take a variety of steps (i.e. Career Exploration training and then Job Search Program).

Our Case Managers will share their knowledge of the labor market, career decision-making programs, training opportunities and job search and job maintenance services. With ongoing support and professional guidance your Case Manager will help you follow through the Action Plan and accomplish your career goals.

This program is funded by the Ministry of Housing and Social Development, Labor Market Services Division; and there is no fee to participate.

Group Job Search Program (GJS)

The Group Job Search Workshops are a no cost, flexible, 5 module rotating program, running weekly, with 16 sessions each month (Monday – Friday 9:15am – 4:15pm, except statutory holidays). The workshops are held within a culturally diverse group environment, led by qualified facilitators.

Participation in the GJS will assist in the job search process and provide the necessary resources, tools and techniques needed to secure employment. Topics covered include: creating a resume and cover letter, compiling a list of references, filling out job application forms, learning about labor market trends, networking, job interview skills, employment standards, and job maintenance techniques. As of January 2010, a new component ‘Introduction to Modern Computer Systems’ has been added, delivered in a Computer Lab. Also, a comprehensive variety of Workplace Skills topics (16--including time management, teamwork, and conflict resolution), have been added to enhance each module further.

There is ongoing support throughout the GJS as well as a follow up period of 3 months.

This program is funded by the Ministry of Housing & Social Development, Labor Market Services Division; and there is no fee to participate.

Individual Job Search

This program is for those who need one-on-one assistance or only require help in a certain area of job search. In an Individual Job Search the client will work one-on-one with an Employment Counselor to fine-tune job search skills. Our experienced, culturally sensitive Employment Counselors have an abundance of knowledge related to all areas of job search.

Since this is one-on-one, the job search skills and techniques clients learn are unique to their needs. Some examples of what clients may gain better knowledge of include: resume and cover letter writing, labor market trends, or job interview skills.

This program is funded by the Ministry of Housing & Social Development, Labor Market Services Division; and there is no fee to participate.

Job Development

The staff will work with foreign trained professionals on development of job leads, by creating connections and partnerships with employers/businesses, to facilitate regular and ongoing placement of clients.
