Wage Subsidy Program (PWS) - Employer Networking Luncheon
Vancouver, BC; August 13, 2009 – The Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society, Vancouver Branch, hosted a special luncheon yesterday at its Offices on Main Street, to raise awareness of their Wage Subsidy Program, among potential employers. The event included a presentation on the program; opportunities for employers to connect with Wage Subsidy staff and each other; and a complimentary lunch. Admission to the event was free.
It was a very exciting and rare opportunity for employers to learn about this program, not well known to the public, and one of few in the Lower Mainland. The Wage Subsidy Program is an initiative that offers a financial incentive to employers, to hire eligible candidates and provide on-the-job work experience, with a view to long term employment. The program was originally funded by Service Canada, but this responsibility has transitioned to the British Columbia Government, under the new Labour Market Development Agreement.
The PICS Wage Subsidy Program has been in operation for 12 years. During this time we have assisted approximately 630 clients find employment in their chosen field, ranging from entry-level to highly skilled professional positions. Over 80% of these clients remain employed with the same employer three months after the subsidy period. The simplicity of the program makes it a cost effective source of human capital.
