Power of Multiculturalism Event
Vancouver, B.C., June 29, 2009 – The Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society, Vancouver Office, hosted an event on Thursday June 25, 2009 to mark Canadian Multiculturalism Day. The actual date designated by the Government of Canada in 2002 is June 27 every year. This was the first time that PICS Vancouver commemorated this special day.It was an opportunity to celebrate our diversity and commitment to democracy, equality and mutual respect; and to appreciate the contributions of the various ethnic groups and communities that make up the mosaic that is Canada.
Our distinguished guest speakers, included Hon Ujjal Dosanjh (MP Vancouver South), David McLellan (General Manager, Community Services, City of Vancouver), Indy Batth (Program Manager, Centre for Intercultural Communication, UBC), and Pansy Hui (Provincial Program Coordinator, Safe Harbour Program, AMSSA). Their remarks were both informative and thought provoking, as they sought to explore the meaning of multiculturalism in our daily lives. Attendees included a diverse group of community and business partners, service providers, clients, our Funder (Ministry of Housing & Social Development), PICS Head Office staff and members of PICS Board of Directors. The occasion was very enjoyable, and guests made the most of the chance to network with each other over refreshments.
