Discover Work 2009 Career Fair
The first Discover Work 2009 Career Fair was held May 23 at John Oliver Secondary School in Vancouver. It was hosted by VSB-SWIS (Vancouver School Board-Settlement Workers in Schools) in partnership with PICS and S.U.C.C.E.S.S. This event was unique, in that it featured employers as well as employment services workshops, such as Resume Writing, Interview Skills, Networking, Labour Market Information etc. On-on-one Resume Clinics were also offered, to assist particularly those with language impediments, with translators for many languages on hand. These services are usually available only through Employment Assistance Services programs. There were also speakers from the employer community and professional associations, providing insight on their fields and industry expectations.
PICS, VSB-SWIS and S.U.C.C.E.S.S. are proud to report that the event was a great success, with around 500 attendees. The VSB District Principal opened the event, with remarks from VSB-SWIS and the partner agencies. Job seekers came from all over the Lower Mainland, with very diverse backgrounds, keenly focused on securing meaningful employment. They were appreciative of the free services provided by Discover Work. This initiative was targeted at the parents of VSB students from immigrant families, and while many were indeed from this demographic, a lot of locals came out as well. The format of the fair with the interpretation services, was very effective in assisting both skilled and non-skilled participants from a variety of backgrounds.
Employers were impressed with how well organized the event was, and with the enthusiasm and professionalism of job seekers. In this difficult labour market Discover Work was timely in acknowledging and addressing the needs of the community. It was another great opportunity for PICS to promote our programs and raise our profile in Vancouver. We are very happy to have been a part of Discover Work 2009, and look forward to many more such partnerships.
