re: Indian women’s group to help “nowhere brides” in Canada.
At PICS we have seen many releases from the government of India about how they are doing support work for non-resident Indians (NRI’s) including abandoned women. In practice, we find that Indian government officials do not respond to our agency’s letters indicating that we will help in British Columbia.
In the past we have sent letters to various ministers in India, including Minister Vayalar Ravi, indicating our willingness to cooperate with Indian authorities in combating marriage fraud. We have never received a response from provincial or federal authorities in India regarding NRI issues or the possibility of a support network set up with PICS to help victims of marriage fraud.
PICS is a large South Asian organization in British Columbia, and we respond to the needs of young women who are abandoned by dowry seeking ‘honeymoon husbands’. Each year we help thousands of immigrants who are looking for jobs, seeking assistance on their rights in Canada, and people who want a better grasp of the English language. We also successfully operate BC’s first South Asian senior’s housing complex offering both an independent living facility, as well as assisted living facility and adult day program.
We urge the National Commission for Women (NCW) in India to connect with us so we can start working together to help these women. We have a list of over 40 women in situations where they desperately need our assistance. Currently we are in the process of getting funding for a second stage housing complex to help these women. This housing project will allow abandoned brides and their young children to live in a safe environment for up to a year. PICS will help educate them and boost their self esteem so they will be able to find sustainable employment for themselves.
It is great to see that the NCW is working with the government of Punjab and India in order to help these women. What we ask at PICS is what is really going to be done to help these women who need assistance now?
